Why Should You go to Church

Scripture for the Day:  Hebrews 10:24-25

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Some Christians attend church faithfully, while others argue that since we can commune privately with God, church is an outdated notion that doesn’t mean anything.  But in his letter to the Hebrews, the writer above explains just how important regularly getting together with other Christians is.

Starting each week with church grounds you be giving you a firm basis in scripture for the rest of your week.  It’s a reminder of what is truly important in God’s eyes.  Starting your week with praise and worship is uplifting.  Worship is also a form of sacrifice – you are giving yourself over to God each Sunday, acknowledging His central role in your life.

Congregatingwith other Christians also allows us to help each other and uphold each other in times of crisis.  If you attend church regularly, you will be surrounded by a strong family of believers in times of trouble.  Without a church family, you may stumble and fall or turn to non-Christians who will lead you away from God.

Prayer Suggestion:  Thank the Lord for the opportunity to meet and become friends with others in a Christian setting each week.  Renew your resolve to sacrifice a few hours each week to the Lord by attending church regularly.

Learn to Speak as God wants You to Speak, Not as the world expects you to speak

Reading for the day:  Proverbs 23:15-16
“My son, if your heart is wise,
then my heart will be glad;
my inmost being will rejoice
when your lips speak what is right.”

Do you sometimes keep your mouth shut instead of speaking up because you are afraid others will judge you for what you say?  Don’t!  The Lord gave us mouths so that we could praise Him and spread the word of His eternal love and forgiveness.  Many times we think to ourselves that talking about God is a job best left to ministers or priests, people who have studied for years and can quote scripture easily.

But God asks each of us to “make a joyful noise.”  He doesn’t care if we sing off-key, don’t explain things well or stutter.  In fact, even Moses had a speaking problem – he stuttered!  Yet God commanded Moses to lead His people out of captivity.  If God expected great words and leadership from Moses, how can we give Him any less?

The proverb doesn’t say “think what is right.”  It says there will be rejoicing when our lips SPEAK what is right.  Knowing God is only half of what is necessary to live a Christian life.  We also have to shout it from the rooftops – or at least share the Good News with our friends, family, co-workers….even our enemies!  So stop worrying about what the world thinks about what you have to say, and start thinking about what GOD wants you to say.  Then speak, loud and clear!

Prayer Suggestion:  Ask the Lord to give you the courage to speak what is right and share His words with those around you.  Commit yourself to saying what people NEED to hear – the word of God – instead of what they want to hear.

The Power of God

The power of God is unlimited and, in its vastness, unknowable in all its forms, yet this amazing and vast power gives us hope and should give us the confidence to go forward in life without fear.  Think about the infinite power of God – He is the One who rolls back the clouds and brings forth sunshine after a storm.  He orders the winds to blow and creates the seasons in order to bring forth food on the earth and provide for all the creatures on it.  We can rely on the fact that night follows day and winter is followed by spring because God’s power makes it so.

In fact, God is unique in all the universe in His power.  He is has attributes that no one and nothing else has that demonstrate the infinite variety and omniscience of His power:

  •  No other creature is capable of creation from nothing.  God alone created the universe itself and all the creatures in it.  He created night and day, the planets and stars and everything on the earth that sustains life.  He willed the very universe into existence and existed before it came into being.
  • No other creature is self-sustaining like God is.  Plants require water and light, animals and people require food.  God requires nothing – He simply Is, with nothing else required.
  • No other creature can forgive like God can forgive.  While we can forgive others for harm they may have done to us, no one has the ability to forgive us all of our transgressions and grant absolution – giving us hope of eternal life.
  • No other creature is Infinite.  He was here at the beginning of time, and is outside of time.  In fact, God and His son, Jesus Christ, are the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega of the universe.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was with God in the beginning.  Through Him all things were made.  In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

– John 1:1-4

So who or what should we put our faith in?  The power of kingdoms and men will fade away, but God is eternal.  He is like nothing and no one else and can be relied on for all your needs.  Do you fully realize and understand the power of His presence in your life?  Many believers speak of the acts of god, but have you ever considered the amazing power of His presence in your own life, the personal power that you have by giving your life over to Him?

If God is for us, who can be against us?”

– Roman 8:31

The next time you are fearful or do not know where to turn, remember that the most powerful force on earth and in heaven is God.  He doesn’t have to do anything but be there, and you have all you need to overcome anything.

For nothing will be impossible with God.”

– Luke 1:37
